RouteClub
Terms of service
Last updated 27 September 2026
What you agree to when you use RouteClub. The same terms are in the app under Profile, Terms and privacy. How we handle your information is in the privacy policy.
What RouteClub is
RouteClub connects people travelling the same long distance route so they can share a ride. Drivers publish the trips they are making, privately or as a transport business. Riders book a seat on one.
RouteClub is not a taxi service and does not employ drivers. The journey itself is an arrangement between the rider and the driver.
RouteClub is run by Route Technologies (Pty) Ltd, a private company registered in South Africa. You can reach us at support@routetechnologies.co.za.
Money
RouteClub does not set, collect or hold the fare paid to a driver. RouteClub charges riders a booking fee per seat booked and drivers a posting fee per published trip, and those two fees are the only money RouteClub takes. The current amounts are shown in the app before you book or post.
RouteClub gives every new account passenger credits, and driver credits to an account that completes driver verification. A credit covers one of those two fees and has no cash value: it cannot be withdrawn, transferred between accounts, exchanged between the passenger and driver balances, or used towards the fare paid to a driver.
Cancellations and refunds
You can cancel a booking from My trips at any time before the trip departs. If you paid the booking fee, you get 90% of it back when you cancel more than 24 hours before departure, 50% between 6 and 24 hours before, and nothing inside the last 6 hours.
If passenger credits paid for the booking, they are returned when you cancel at least 6 hours before departure, and not inside the last 6 hours.
If a driver declines your request, or a trip you booked is cancelled, your booking fee is refunded in full or your credits are returned. If the trip fills up while your payment is going through, your booking fee is refunded in full.
If your driver does not arrive, report it in My trips and RouteClub will either refund your booking fee in full or move you onto the next suitable trip on the same route, whichever you choose.
The posting fee is not refunded when a trip is cancelled. Credit bundles cannot be refunded once bought, because the credits can be used straight away. RouteClub cannot refund a fare it never received.
Using RouteClub
You must give accurate details and verify your identity before booking or driving. Accounts that impersonate someone else, or that are used to harass, threaten or endanger other people, are suspended.
Drivers must hold a valid licence for the vehicle they publish, and must publish the vehicle they will actually arrive in.
Drivers may use RouteClub for a transport business. A driver who does is responsible for holding the operating licence and any permit the law requires for carrying passengers.
Do not use RouteClub to move anything illegal, and do not ask another user to.
Who may use RouteClub
You must be 18 or older, and the details on your account must be your own and accurate. One person, one account.
You may not use RouteClub on behalf of somebody else, or resell seats you have booked.
If you break these terms, RouteClub can suspend or close your account, cancel your trips or bookings, and refuse to let you make a new account. Where somebody is at risk, that can happen immediately and without warning.
What RouteClub is not responsible for
RouteClub is a place to find people travelling the same way. It does not drive, it does not own or maintain any vehicle, and it does not employ, supervise or direct any driver. The journey is an agreement between the rider and the driver, and the two of them carry it out themselves.
Verifying an identity confirms that a person is who they say they are. It is not a driving test, a character reference or a roadworthy certificate, and it is not a promise about how anyone will behave on the day.
RouteClub is not responsible for what happens on a journey. That includes an accident or injury, a late or cancelled departure, the route a driver chooses, property that is damaged, lost or left behind in a vehicle, and anything a rider or a driver says or does to another person.
Drivers are responsible for their own licence, for their vehicle being roadworthy and insured, and for any permit the law requires them to hold. Riders are responsible for deciding whether they are willing to travel with a particular driver.
RouteClub does not promise that the app is always available, that a trip will exist on a route you searched, or that a driver will accept your request.
Where RouteClub is genuinely at fault for something, what it owes you is limited to the fees it actually charged you for that booking or that posted trip, because those fees are the only money it ever received.
South African law does not allow everything to be signed away, and this section does not try to. Nothing here takes away a right you have under the Consumer Protection Act, and nothing here limits responsibility for gross negligence or for something done deliberately.
If something goes wrong between you and another person
A disagreement about a journey, a fare, behaviour on the road or anything that happened in a vehicle is between the people involved. RouteClub is not a party to it.
RouteClub will act on reports, and can suspend or remove an account over them, but it does not arbitrate disputes, decide who was right, or pay compensation on anyone's behalf.
If something criminal or dangerous happens, contact the police. RouteClub will cooperate with a lawful request for information.
Standing behind your own conduct
If somebody brings a claim against RouteClub because of something you did, something you failed to do, or because you broke these terms or the law, that claim is yours to answer. You agree to cover RouteClub for the costs, damages and legal fees that come out of it.
This does not cover anything that was RouteClub's own doing, and it does not apply where the law says it cannot.
What you write and upload
Messages, photos, ratings and reviews are yours, and you are responsible for them. Do not post anything false, threatening, discriminatory, or belonging to somebody else.
By posting it, you allow RouteClub to store and display it inside the app for the purpose it was posted for. A review stays visible after a trip ends, because that is what makes ratings worth anything.
Anything that breaks these rules can be removed without notice.
Other companies involved
Payments are handled by outside providers, and identity documents, messages and notifications pass through services RouteClub does not own. Those companies have their own terms, and RouteClub is not responsible for an outage, a delay or a decision made by one of them.
Changes to these terms
RouteClub can change these terms as the product changes. The current version is always in the app and on this page, and continuing to use RouteClub after a change means you accept it. Where a change materially affects you, you will be told inside the app.
Which law applies
These terms are governed by the law of the Republic of South Africa, and any dispute about them is dealt with in a South African court.
If one part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest of them still stand.
Nothing here removes a right you have under the Consumer Protection Act or any other law that cannot be contracted out of.
